Highlights: 2010s—The Edge of Glory…

2010

A.S. degree in General Science with Specialization in Engineering was introduced.

SIFE earned an impressive 6th regional championship.

Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Strickler, long-time donors to the BRCC Educational Foundation, were recognized by the Chancellor for Leadership in Philanthropy.

2011

Students in lab in the Advanced Technology Center

The $7.2 million Advanced Technology Center opened. It is a LEED Gold certified facility.

Two survivors and one rescuer of the USS Indianapolis disaster presented “Courage Beyond Measure: The USS Indianapolis Story” to a packed house in the Plecker Center for a final time. The WWII heroes began visiting the College in 2006.

Distance learning vet tech students at John Tyler Community College achieved a 100 percent pass rate on state board exams.

2012

Peer Tutoring in the CAVE

The Center for Academic Vision and Excellence (CAVE) opened. The CAVE addressed the need for improved face-to-face connections with students to keep them engaged academically.

A standing room only crowd attended a showing of an award-winning documentary called “Rothstein’s First Assignment.” The film was about Arthur Rothstein, a photographer who chronicled the removal of mountain residents during the creation of the Shenandoah National Park.

A Transfer Center opened in E Building, giving students on-campus access to transfer advisors from four local colleges.

2013

BRCC participated in Japanese culture presentations thanks to a grant awarded to UVA by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

BRCC became home to the nation’s first online, FAA approved Airframe and Powerplant Certificate.

Automotive Repair and Analysis students achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the Automotive Service Excellence exams.

2014

Weight room in the Rec Center

Two new facilities opened: the Welding and Machining Center in Mount Crawford and the Recreation Center on the main campus.

Re-enactors presented a lecture about the Buffalo Soldiers for Black History Month.

Twenty-two middle school girls descended on the Advanced Technology Center for a summer program called GEMS2: Girls Embracing Mechatronics Systems.

2015

The Educational Foundation’s 20th Spring Fling auction raised more than $70K. Fiscal year 2015-16 was the Foundation’s most successful fundraising year in almost a decade.

The College hosted a Manufacturing Summit with more than 100 participants.

BRCC and Blue Ridge Aviation teamed up to offer an affordable way to earn a Private Pilot license, Instrument Pilot, and/or Commercial Pilot ratings.

2016

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in August for the newly renovated Houff Student Center.

International Month featured a one-actor show called “They Call Me Q” and a presentation by humanitarian Carl Wilkens, the last American to remain in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.

All 39 of Vet Tech’s class of 2016 passed the National Veterinary Technician Exam.

2017
