Great Expectations Program for Foster Youth
To help Virginia’s foster youth complete high school, gain access to a community college education, and transition successfully to living independently.
Building the Bond
Students in this program receive support and guidance from the Great Expectations Coach, an adult campus mentor and a peer mentor to help them transition from high school to college.
Who Is Eligible?
Great Expectations serves foster youth and foster care alumni who are currently between the ages of 16 and 24 who:
- are currently in the custody of the local Department of Social Services
- were under the care and custody of the Department of Social Services at or after the age of 13 and then left care due to reunification, adoption, informal kinship care, or aging out of the system
- were adopted under a “Special Needs” designation from foster care at any age
At this time, youth who have been placed through DSS Child Protective Services in an informal kinship placement or legal guardianship that was not designated as a foster care provider are not eligible for these services.
We are currently seeking foster youth and former foster youth between the ages of 16 and 24 to participate, as well as volunteers for Peer Mentors and Campus Mentors. If you or someone you know is eligible for the program, or is interested in becoming a Mentor, please contact us.
