Student Emergency Financial Assistance

Student Emergency Financial Assistance funding is intended to assist students who face unexpected emergency situations that impede their ability to continue and succeed academically and personally while enrolled at Blue Ridge Community College.

Eligibility Criteria

The SOAR Coordinator will review submitted requests to determine if criteria are met. At the Coordinator’s discretion, appropriate completed applications are forwarded to the Review Committee.  Awards are at the discretion of the committee who oversees the application process. The committee’s decision is final. 

Students MUST: 

  • Be enrolled in and attending the current term with Blue Ridge Community College as the primary institution
  • Have submitted a current and complete FAFSA (or, where applicable, the VASA application for certain students ineligible to file FAFSA). Applicants must be up to date with all institutional requests for documentation needed to complete the financial aid process
  • Demonstrate a current and clearly defined emergency or unexpected situation and submit documentation of emergency.
  • Demonstrate financial need that creates a barrier to pursuing an education at BRCC. 
  • Meet federal satisfactory academic progress (SAP) GPA and completion rate standards.  First semester students will only be considered upon receipt of professor feedback regarding academic performance. Professor feedback may be requested for any applicant. 
  • Not owe money to any Virginia Community College.
  • Be willing to discuss their needs with the Financial Aid office and/or SOAR Center to help determine other resources for consideration.

* This funding can NOT pay for tuition. 

*International sponsored students with an F1 Status are NOT eligible.

*Students enrolled in Fast Forward programs will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Application Process

If the student has met the above eligibility criteria, the SOAR Coordinator and student will meet via in-person, via phone or Zoom to review the application and coordinate needed documentation to submit for Committee review.

A summary overview, and the application will be submitted to the Review Committee, and their decision will be provided to the applicant via phone or email.

Decisions made by the Review Committee are final. If approved, funding source and payment process may vary.
