Summer Aid

Receiving Summer Financial Aid at BRCC

Beginning on the day that summer registration opens, students can begin applying for summer financial aid. To be considered for priority funding, please apply as soon as possible after you register for summer courses.

Please note that even if you were not eligible for grants in the Fall/Spring semesters, you may have grant eligibility in the summer. You must register for classes BEFORE applying for summer aid.

Pell Grant

The United States Department of Education has implemented a new program beginning with summer 2018 that will allow students who are eligible for the Pell grant to receive it in the summer semester even if they attended full-time in fall and spring. There are a few restrictions, but submitting the application ensures we review your eligibility for summer Pell.

Keep in mind that your Pell grant is prorated based on the number of credits you enroll in each term. Awards will initially be offered based on full-time enrollment. Pell grants are reduced for part-time students.

State Grants and Other Federal Grants

Each year, BRCC receives an allocation of funds from various sources. The majority of funds are disbursed to fall and spring students, but unused funds from students who do not attend or who graduate between semesters are rolled over to summer semester. Eligible students are packaged with grants from these sources on a first-come, first-served basis. YOU MUST SUBMIT THE SUMMER FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THESE FUNDS. The earlier you apply, the more likely you will be to receive this type of funding in the summer. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.

Federal Direct Student Loans

Unless your EFC (Expected Family Contribution from FAFSA) is over $10,000, you must submit the summer financial aid application before applying for student loans in the summer. Summer loan requests will be returned to you if you do not submit the summer financial aid application first or have an EFC over $10,000.

Students have annual loan limits indicating how much they are eligible to borrow based on their class level and dependency status. The annual loan limit applies to the academic year, which runs Fall, Spring, Summer. Students who take summer classes may borrow up to the amount of their annual limit minus any loans borrowed in Fall and/or Spring. Please see the loan request form for more information in

Parent PLUS Loans

The parents of dependent students may borrow on their behalf to pay for tuition and fees, books, and miscellaneous education-related living expenses. The Summer PLUS Loan Request Form will be available April 1st. For more information on the PLUS loan, please visit see Parent Loan Information.

Alternative Loans

While any student can apply for an alternative loan, it is important to exhaust your federal loan options first. Independent students who have exhausted their annual or lifetime federal loan limits, dependent students whose parents cannot or do not wish to take a parent loan, continuing education students or students in programs that are not long enough to be eligible for federal aid, or students who have lost aid eligibility due to Satisfactory Academic Progress violations are examples of students who may want to consider an alternative loan.

For more information on alternative loans, please see Alternative Loan Information.

Please be sure to submit the summer application BEFORE applying for an alternative loan, as you may have grant eligibility in the summer even if you did not in the fall/spring.
