Active Shooter Response

In case of an Active Shooter on campus:

1. RUN

If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate to a safe area. (For example, the regional academy, soccer field, softball field – dependent upon where you are)

  1. Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow
    1. Help others to escape, if possible
    2. Do not attempt to move wounded people
  2. Leave your belongings behind
  3. Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be
  4. Call 911 when you are safe, provide your location and description/last known location of shooter.
  5. Wait for police to find you and follow instructions of any police officers
    1. Keep your hands visible to identify yourself to law enforcement as “friendly”

2. HIDE

If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to harm you. Your hiding place should be out of the active shooter’s view, provide protection in the event shots are fired in your direction, and does not trap you or restrict you from moving.

  1. Close the door and lock the door, if possible.
    1. Barricade the door, if possible
  2. Stay as low to the floor as possible and remain quiet and still
  3. Turn off any source of noise
  4. Hide behind large solid items
  5. Close blinds or shades or cover windows with paper, if available. Block noise or light under doors with towels or clothing

3. FIGHT

Take action against the active shooter – As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger

  1. Act as aggressively as possible
  2. Throw items. Improvise weapons (For example, Fire extinguishers, pens, heavy backpacks, pepper spray)
  3. Yell
  4. Commit to your actions

4. IF YOU SUBDUE THE AGGRESSOR

  1. Do not pick up the weapon
  2. Separate the aggressor and the weapon
  3. Maintain control of the aggressor with multiple people and call the police
  4. Follow directions of officers when they arrive

Remember, if you try to leave campus, heavy traffic will be likely because of blocked roads and you will probably be stuck. Determine if that is your safest action.
