Middle schoolers can explore careers in exciting fields like crime scene investigation, nursing, 3D computer aided design and more during the Career Choices event at BRCC this February! The FREE event will be held February 15, from 9 am to noon at BRCC. Participants will choose a topic to delve into and solve real work challenges in that field.

Workshops

Arduino Devices & Programming

From turning on a light to building a banana piano, the world of Arduino electronics is highly interactive. What can you do with a tiny computer, some wires, and sensors? Learn to write a program and control the world - at least a little piece of it!

Building a Computer

 Using all the parts of a computer system and the basic concepts of a Windows-based operating system (OS), you’ll build a computer system and receive an introduction to the OS installation procedure. By the end of class, you’ll be able to describe the basic functions of all the computer’s parts including CPU, mainboard, etc.

Lego Robots that Change the World

Learn about the science and technology involved in making and controlling robots. See how electronics and automation are changing our world every day. Students work with Lego Mindstorms to show the mechanical and electrical assembly, and then the computer control of a simple robotic device.

The Digital Darkroom

 Are you interested in photography and computers? Do you want to see how a "real" camera works? Do you have an interest in creating digital art or want to pursue a career in graphic design? Here is your chance to work with Adobe software to create a piece of digital art you can take home.

Sparking Your Car Knowledge

 An electrical morning in the BRCC Automotive Lab. Explore the world of Automotive Technology. You will create a device to take home and share your knowledge & skills with your friends and family.

Thinking about becoming a nurse? Visit our BRCC Nursing lab and use the tools of the trade that help millions of patients every day. Meet Sim Man and help us diagnose and treat the symptoms that brought him to our virtual hospital.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)

 Explore the fascinating world of Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation. Learn how to find and collect different kinds of evidence at crime scenes, and then how it’s used in a criminal trial. Hands-on activities include collecting latent fingerprints using black powder, locating and recovering tool mark impressions. Using the details of actual police cases, the workshop culminates with a mock crime scene investigation where you’ll work in teams to present your results.

Pottery 101

Explore the wondrous world of clay and learn about art-related jobs in this hands-on workshop in the ceramics studio. You'll make functional objects using slabs and extrusions and then decorate them while learning about careers in the arts.

Care for the Creatures

 Do you love animals? Tour the Veterinary Technology clinic and labs, and learn how to keep dogs & cats healthy by preventing problems with the early detection of disease. You’ll gain knowledge to be able to examine your pet.

Cyber Security

Explore various topics of Cyber Security, giving practice through hands-on experience. Participants will learn how to minimize potential risks that may be associated with their online experiences and explore opportunities for careers in the Cyber Security field.
