Children’s Theatre Workshop
Here is an exciting opportunity for your 8–15 year-old child to participate in a semester-long workshop culminating in a Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre performance. This 13-week program that includes dramatic exercises as well as rehearsal for a production of Oliver Twist. New this year, your child will sign up for the workshop and then audition for a role.
Auditions will be held the first Saturday of the workshop, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m.

Director Matthew Grandpré has been involved in 87 musical and theatrical productions, winning acting awards for his portrayal of Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Riff in West Side Story, Lt. Dawson in A Few Good Men, Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof and Dallas Winston in The Outsiders. Among his directing credits are Fiddler on the Roof, Ragtime, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Les Miserables (which featured students from all middle and high schools in California’s Antelope Valley). Matthew has worked at five music studios, served as vocal or music director for seven high school productions, and directed three children’s choirs. He graduated cum laude from Cal State Northridge with a degree in Music Education and received his Special Education teaching credential from Cal State Bakersfield. A teacher’s aide for the Waynesboro Public Schools’ Phoenix Program, Matthew is currently writing a book and original play with a musical score.
Pottery Workshop NEW
Designed for 12–16 year-olds, this semester-long workshop will provide a unique opportunity for your child to discover the wonderful world of pottery! In 12 sessions, your child will learn how to throw cups, bowls and other shapes on the potter’s wheel, as well as create hand built pots using coil-building and slab-building techniques. The basics of textures and ways to make different marks, as well as the glazing process, will be covered. No prior ceramics experience is necessary. The workshop will culminate in a student exhibition and reception. Space is limited, so register early!

Instructor Terry Porter began her career in ceramics as an apprentice to potter Jim Hanger from 1980 to 1989. In 1990, she built a studio and became a full time potter. Her functional pottery is wheel thrown and altered stoneware, with hand sculpted additions. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Blue Ridge Community College, Churchville Elementary, Hugh K. Cassell Elementary, Stuarts Draft Elementary, and Weyers Cave Elementary. She has served on the board of Virginia Artisans, and The Artisan Center of Virginia.
YoungRock – Youth Rock Band Workshop
Join other young rockers, ages 14-17, as we form bands, learn techniques of rehearsal, song selection, performance, stage presence, and collaboration, and totally ROCK the Shenandoah Valley this fall! Musicians must have at least a year's experience on their instrument. Bring your gear and your desire to rock. Sign-ups will be limited per instrument, with a maximum of 4 drummers, 4 bass guitarists, 6 guitarists and 6 vocalists; other instruments by permission of the instructor. Bands will be formed and will work throughout the season to prepare sets of songs for a concert.

YoungRock Director John Dull received his Master of Music degree from East Carolina University in music theory and composition, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bridgewater College in music, focusing on guitar. For nearly a decade, John has taught dozens of private guitar students in North Carolina and Virginia, teaching a variety of styles from classical to folk to rock and beyond. John is currently adjunct Professor of Music (Composition) at Eastern Mennonite University, Guitar Instructor for the Shenandoah Valley Preparatory Music Program at EMU, and the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton.
SAT I Prep
There’s a lot riding on your SAT scores. Prepare to deal successfully with exam topics ranging from writing to critical reading and math. Learn about short passages, long passages, and paired passages that test reading comprehension, as well as higher level math questions (geometric notation, basic trigonometry, and new statistics concepts), and the required essay. Bring pencils, notebook, and a scientific/graphing calculator. Required text available at BRCC Bookstore, The Official SAT Study Guide.
