Blue Ridge Community College achieves HRCI Approved Provider Status

The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) is the leading independent, internationally recognized certifying body for the HR profession. HRCI certifications require professionals to demonstrate their expertise in the core principles of HR practice and the application of those principles. HRCI's three core certifications meet the needs of nearly every HR professional:

  • PHR® (Professional in Human Resources)

  • SPHR® (Senior Professional in Human Resources)

  • GPHR® (Global Professional in Human Resources)

Many Human Resource professionals in our area hold these certifications. In order to maintain their certification, these professionals are required to complete continuing education contact hours. Hours can be obtained through continuing education, instruction, on-the-job experience, research and publishing, leadership, and professional membership in a national HR professional association.

BRCC has gone through an extensive review process in order to become an Approved Provider of HRCI Credits.  This means that BRCC is authorized to determine HR-relatedness of BRCC programs and courses and calculate and award recertification credit hours.

For a list of currently-approved classes, look for the HRCI logo in the Business class listings

Career Switchers Persevere to Become Teachers

It took Karen Zirk two decades to become a science teacher. Her path included obtaining a college degree, dealing with family responsibilities, working at a poultry plant and then as a teller manager at Wachovia bank. Zirk left the banking community, but took her real-life experiences with her. She graduated from the Career Switchers program offered at Blue Ridge Community College and earned her teacher’s certificate. The Career Switchers program is for candidates who have a bachelor’s degree and at least five years of work experience. It offers a “fast track” to getting a teacher’s license. Zirk is now a full-time science teacher for Shenandoah County.

Dixie Gas Goes the Extra Mile

The commercial driving school at Blue Ridge Community College just received a big donation – a really big donation. Verona-based Dixie Gas & Oil Company recently donated a gas truck to facilitate the training of commercial drivers with tank endorsements.

Chris Earhart, President of Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation and Janice S. "Bonnie" Moyers, Dean of Workforce Services and Continuing Education

Chris Earhart, President of Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation, commented, “We are excited about new opportunities we now have with the commercial driving school at BRCC.  We will be able to use the program to enhance and train our own employees.  In the past it has been difficult at times to find good drivers with endorsements for tank vehicles.  By donating this truck we are promoting on-road safety and helping to generate new drivers with tank endorsements.” The college and Dixie Gas have been affiliated for years. “While this is a new chapter in our relationship with BRCC’s commercial driving school, they have long been our partner.  We have had been able to provide them with numerous training opportunities which help generate revenue for the school and we hope that this act solidifies our commitment to BRCC and the young people in the community.”

“This truck donation by Dixie Gas and Oil Corporation is an excellent and important addition to our commercial driving school training equipment, and the timing of the donation couldn’t be better because we currently are expanding our CDL Class B instructional program,” explained Bonnie Moyers, Dean of Workforce Services and Continuing Education at BRCC. She added, “Having this type of support from local employers is extremely valuable to Blue Ridge—it helps us have good training equipment and also helps us contain our program costs and in turn the costs to those we train.  We are very grateful to Mr. Earhart and his company for such outstanding support of the College and our Commercial Driving Program.”
