Learning Can Be Fun offers a "hands-on" approach to many fascinating topics. Class size is kept to a minimum to allow for flexibility and individual attention provided by a team of outstanding instructors. Each program, unless otherwise indicated, will be held at the BRCC Weyers Cave Campus and consists of 15 hours of instruction within a one-week period. Morning classes will meet from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and afternoon classes will meet from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Children will be given a LCBF T-shirt with their first registration. Parents, siblings, and friends are invited last half hour of class on Friday to observe what the students have done during the week.  In an effort to better serve the young people of our area, BRCC offers a LCBF Grad School for youth in rising grades 9 through 12. The fee for any course is $95, unless otherwise stated.

Be a Famous Artist (rising grades 3-5)

This workshop combines art history and studio work for young artists.  You will use a variety of mediums, including watercolor, pastel, collage, charcoal and pencil.  You will also be given a sketchbook to record notes and render sketches.  All are welcome to attend our exhibit day on Friday!

Building and Flying Model Airplanes (rising grades 6-9)

Do you love airplanes?  If you’ve ever wanted to learn the answers to such questions as "How do planes fly?" and "How do pilots control aircraft?," this is the class for you!  You will design and build a glider from balsa wood, and build a rubber-band-powered plane from a kit.  In addition, you will learn how to balance and flight-trim the glider and plane to improve their performance.

GIS and GPS–What is This Anyway? (rising grades 7-12)

Have you ever been lost while hiking or hunting in the woods, or just wondered about the best way to get somewhere?  Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) can help you locate your position anytime, anywhere, regardless of the weather.  During class you will be given a GPS unit to use for storing tracks, routes and measuring distances.  Come learn how to use the same equipment that is used for search and rescue missions, for helping pilots avoid collisions, and for city planners to know where grocery stores, fire stations, and gas stations need to be built.  Within a few years, there will be a huge demand for workers with the skills to use this kind of technology.

Golf for Beginners (rising grades 7-12)

Bring your own clubs and begin to learn the basics of an all-time favorite sport you can play and enjoy for a lifetime.  Golf rules, fundamentals, and etiquette will be stressed through a variety of fun drills. You will be amazed at how much you will learn about this sport in just one week!  On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the class will be held at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg where students will use the driving range, putting green and practice course.  On Friday, the class will go to Sandy Bottom Par Three Course in Bridgewater.

Do you like to sing songs? How about making up some of your own music? Well, come join the fun as we combine songs and stories to create our own original musical production! We’ll choose a well-known folk tale, then make up new words for some familiar tunes or write some of our own music, and turn a plain story into a wild and wacky musical adventure! Stream Safari (rising grades 2-4)

Have you ever wondered what those critters are that live under rocks in streams?  This course will help you learn about the small creatures living in our local streams and the important role they play in their environment.  You will learn how clean and healthy a stream is by discovering the living things in it.  Weather permitting, during three days of the week you will go on a discovery stream safari: one day you will explore in a mountain stream, another day in a small valley stream, and the third day in a valley river.  Don’t miss this fun learning experience!

What Makes Animals Tick (rising grades 5-8)

So you like animals and want to know more about them?  Take this opportunity to explore the animal world, both small and large, and discover what makes them tick.  You will get to spend time in the lab, vet clinic and BRCC barn learning animal care, behavior, what makes animals sick and how to fix them.  You will also witness an actual surgery and participate in a dissection!  Be ready to learn lots about the animal kingdom.

Caving Adventure Week (rising grades 7-9)          NEW

This day-long course will offer introductory experiences exploring different types of wild caves in the region.  You will participate in day trips to explore at least four different caves based upon the group’s abilities and interests.  Cave formation, ecology and preservation will be discussed.  Coveralls and safety equipment are provided for each student.  You must bring a bag lunch and water bottles each day.  Please note that you must have the physical ability to crawl and climb up or down short distances and be comfortable in a cave environment.  Course information packets will be sent home to each student upon registration.

Water Adventure Week (rising grades 4-6)

This course is designed to be less physically challenging than an “Adventure Sport Sampler Class” but a great introduction to some of the water-related adventure activities that are a part of the “sampler” class.  You will get to participate in the following abbreviated day trips (weather and water levels permitting): a 3- to 5-mile raft float trip on one of the area’s mild rivers; a waterfall hike and swim day; a river-tubing day of floating in fabric-covered tubes down an area river; a swimming hole day of old-fashioned playing in the water at one or two area swimming holes; and on the last day a trip to an area lake to relax, paddle kayaks, play on a giant inner-tube, or have fun participating in different water and beach games.  All necessary equipment and personal flotation devices will be provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

You will create a paper amusement park and corresponding map based on the time capsule theme.   Design a Dinosaur Park with a T-Rex roller coaster ride, or a Wild West Amusement Park with a Rattlesnake coaster ride!  Or, maybe an Alice in Wonderland Park with a Tea Cup ride, or a Space Age Park with a Flying Saucer ride?!Or, how about a Pirate Amusement Park with a Rocking Pirate Ship ride?!  Wow, the choice is all yours!  All parks will be on display on exhibit day.

Civil War Adventures (rising grades 4-7)

Did you know that Civil War battles were fought in this area?  Back in June, 1862 battles took place near here in Harrisonburg, Cross Keys and Port Republic.  Maps, models and daily interpretative field trips providing walks upon these battlefields will be used to enhance your understanding of them.  The significance of Brown’s Gap to General Stonewall Jackson’s strategy will also be explored.

Clay Workshop I (rising grades 2-4)

The bountiful treasure of the earth led us to the art of clay.  You will enjoy creating pottery using the Navajo design and method of the coil pot.  Whimsical creatures will emerge from clay to tell stories of fantastic adventures, and mask-making will highlight the experience.  All clay works will be on exhibit on the last day of the workshop.

Do you have compassion and drive?  Do you have a desire to help others?  If so, this is the workshop for you!  Welcome to Nursing!  This 15-hour course will cover the stages of life from birth to the elderly.  With the help of our simulation lab, you will actually get to watch a birth, complete an assessment of the pediatric and adult client, learn how to obtain vital signs, learn basic first aid, interpret basic heart rhythms, listen to heart and lung sounds, and learn what is normal and what is not.  With the help of Gerry, our elderly mannequin, you will discover common findings of the elderly client.  All of this and more will challenge you to look at yourself and discover that nurse inside you.

Tom-Toms, Totem Poles and Tepees (rising grades 1-3)

Learn to dye fabric just like Native Americans did using flowers, berries, seeds and other natural materials … then weave it into a wall-hanging complete with beads and feathers.  Help build a totem pole, paint with sand, learn some Indian games and songs, and spend time in a real tepee.  You’ll do this and more as we explore an exciting part of our country’s history based on daily life experiences of Native Americans.

Outdoor Adventure Sports Sampler (rising grades 7-9)

This day-long course will offer introductory experiences in four of today’s most popular outdoor adventure sports: top-rope climbing, wild cave exploration, recreational kayaking and river tubing.  You will participate in day trips doing all four of these activities (weather and water levels permitting) in the first four days of the course.  The last day will be a lake trip to relax, paddle kayaks, have fun playing on a giant inner-tube, and participate in different water and beach games.  To keep this course fun for repeat participants, each year we select different caves and climbing areas on a three-year cycle.  All technical and safety equipment is provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

Recreational Kayaking Adventure Week (rising grades 10-12)

This day-long course will offer introductory recreational kayaking experiences on different stretches of two and three different rivers during the week (weather and water levels permitting).  We plan to paddle the first two days of the course, go river-tubing or rafting the third day to relax and rest our kayak-paddling muscles, then paddle the last two days of the course.  We will be using recreational kayaks, which have large open cockpits extending from the paddler’s knees to the seat back – if the boat overturns, the paddler will simply fall out.  These boats require no special training to enter, exit or paddle.  You will be provided boats, paddles, life jackets, water-safety helmets, dry bags and a first-aid kit.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

Water Adventure Week (rising grades 4-6)

This course is designed to be less physically challenging than an “Adventure Sport Sampler Class” but a great introduction to some of the water-related adventure activities that are a part of the more physically-demanding “sampler” class.  You will get to participate in the following abbreviated day trips (weather and water levels permitting): a 3- to 5-mile raft float trip on one of the area’s mild rivers; a waterfall hike and swim day; a river-tubing day of floating in fabric-covered tubes down an area river; a swimming hole day of old-fashioned playing in the water at one or two area swimming holes; and on the last day a trip to an area lake to relax, paddle kayaks, play on a giant inner-tube, and have fun participating in different water and beach games.  All necessary equipment and personal flotation devices will be provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

Pottery students will continue to hone their skills and develop craftsmanship in this workshop.  Projects will include a Navajo dish, small critters, silly faces, a pencil cup and much more.  Painting techniques and texture will be emphasized to help embellish clay works.  The primary goal is to expand the experience of the clay artisan.  Participation in Clay Workshop I is not a requirement.  All are welcome to attend our exhibit day on Friday!
