LEARNING CAN BE FUN SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM -- 2008 SCHEDULE

Learning Can Be Fun offers a "hands-on" approach to many fascinating topics. Class size is kept to a minimum to allow for flexibility and individual attention provided by a team of outstanding instructors. Each program, unless otherwise indicated, will be held at the BRCC Weyers Cave Campus and consists of 15 hours of instruction within a one-week period. Morning classes will meet from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and afternoon classes will meet from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Students will be given a LCBF T-shirt with their first registration. Parents, siblings, and friends are invited last half hour of class on Friday to observe what the students have done during the week.  The fee for any course is $95, unless otherwise stated.

Adventures of Mark Twain (rising grades 1-4)

Nineteenth-century America and the world of Mark Twain come to life as we journey back in time to learn about the man who was not only an important author, but also had careers as a painter, steamboat pilot, miner, inventor, traveler, businessman, lecturer and newspaper reporter.  You will have an opportunity to make printer’s type, invent new words, unmask a hoax, match fingerprints, build a paddlewheel boat, plan a newspaper and much, much more … all while exploring the life of this multi-talented man!

Beginning Writer's Workshop (rising grades 5-6)

Do you love to read, feel creative, and enjoy writing?  If so, this is the course for you!  Writers will make bound books of their work in this upbeat class that combines writing time, group sharing time, and reading the works of other authors. Join in the fun and have a collection of your writings at the end of the week to share with friends and family.

If you enjoy playing computer games, then you will really love this course – this is computer programming at its most fun!  During the week you will get to create your own games and play them on the computer.  You will learn how to create maps, images, characters and tools in this hands-on, fun-filled gaming course.

Fly-Tying & Spin-Cast Fishing (rising grades 4-7)

Have you ever tried to tie artificial dry flies that actually float?  You’ll do that in this class, and use them as well as wet flies, nymphs, terrestrial insects, hellgrammites, and minnows to catch fish.  You will also fish using a spin-cast rod and reel with a casting bobber to catch sunfish, crappie, and bass with the lures you tie.  A minimum of three afternoons will be spent at streams and farm ponds actually fishing.  Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Inventing Instruments (rising grades K-1)

Have you ever created a homemade guitar or trumpet or drum? How about a sniggle-bopper or a soosa-flute? Well, if you’ve ever wanted to create your own musical instrument, then now is the time! Find out what we can come up with to make our own Storytelling Band! We’ll invent our instruments, and then tell a tale or two with our new musical sound effects. Storytelling with instruments is fun!

Do you have compassion and drive?  Do you have a desire to help others?  If so, this is the workshop for you!  Welcome to Nursing!  This 15-hour course will cover the stages of life from birth to the elderly.  With the help of our simulation lab, you will actually get to watch a birth, complete an assessment of the pediatric and adult client, learn how to obtain vital signs, learn basic first aid, interpret basic heart rhythms, listen to heart and lung sounds, and learn what is normal and what is not.  With the help of Gerry, our elderly mannequin, you will discover common findings of the elderly client.  All of this and more will challenge you to look at yourself and discover that nurse inside you.

Paint, Draw, and Be Merry (rising grades K-1) 

You will experience the basics of painting and drawing through the media of paint, charcoal, pencil and collage.  Sketchbooks will be provided, and exercises in creative thinking will stretch your imagination.  Included is a mural project in which you will learn to work together and share your creative ideas.  You will then select your best work and be oriented in the method of matting in preparation for an art exhibit.  So put on your beret, pick up a brush, and paint with us!

JULY 21-25, Full Days, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Water Adventure Week (rising grades 4-6) 

This course is designed to be less physically challenging than an “Adventure Sport Sampler Class” but a great introduction to some of the water-related adventure activities that are a part of the “sampler” class.  You will get to participate in the following abbreviated day trips (weather and water levels permitting): a 3- to 5-mile raft float trip on one of the area’s mild rivers; a waterfall hike and swim day; a river-tubing day of floating in fabric-covered tubes down an area river; a swimming hole day of old-fashioned playing in the water at one or two area swimming holes; and on the last day a trip to an area lake to relax, paddle kayaks, play on a giant inner-tube, or have fun participating in different water and beach games.  All necessary equipment and personal flotation devices will be provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

Beginning Karate (rising grades 2-8)

Come get some kicks for kids at BRCC!  In this course you will learn the basic techniques of karate including blocks, punches and kicks.  You will also learn about ancient Japanese culture and experience other fun activities.  The fee for this course includes a karate uniform that each child may keep.  Please give size information when registering.

Jungle Art (rising grades 3-5)

Discover wild jungle creatures and their environment through this 3-dimensional art form.  You will work on a soft-sculptured snake, a parrot mobile, clay elephants and lizards, and a dodo bird puppet … plus work on 2-dimensional paintings of jungle animals and sketchbook drawings!  All of your artwork will be on display during exhibit day on Friday.

Do you like to sing songs? How about making up some of your own music? Well, come join the fun as we combine songs and stories to create our own original musical production! We’ll choose a well-known folk tale, then make up new words for some familiar tunes or write some of our own music, and turn a plain story into a wild and wacky musical adventure! Singing, dancing, playing and laughing will be required! Storytelling through music is fun!
