LEARNING CAN BE FUN SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM -- 2009 SCHEDULE

Learning Can Be Fun offers a "hands-on" approach to many fascinating topics. Class size is kept to a minimum to allow for flexibility and individual attention provided by a team of outstanding instructors. Each program, unless otherwise indicated, will be held at the BRCC Weyers Cave Campus and consists of 15 hours of instruction within a one-week period. Morning classes will meet from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and afternoon classes will meet from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. Students will be given a LCBF T-shirt with their first registration. Parents, siblings, and friends are invited last half hour of class on Friday to observe what the students have done during the week.  The fee for any course is $99, unless otherwise stated.

Special sessions for rising kindergartners are back, and this year we’re offering Mommy and Me classes for mothers and their 2- to 4-year-old toddlers, along with several morning classes for parents, grandparents, drivers, neighbors – who want to have as much fun as their kids!  Listed at the beginning of each week.

In this course you will explore various art forms from near and far.  Do you want to dance the meringue, say common Spanish phrases, and paint Oaxaca animals made from clay?  Or maybe you might like to create necklaces from Africa, sing traditional songs, or even learn new recipes from around the world?  The instructor has visited many places around the globe such as the Dominican Republic, Belize, Ethiopia, Haiti, and Mexico and is looking forward to sharing the many different things she has learned from her travels.

Building and Flying Model Airplanes (rising grades 6-9)

Do you love airplanes?  If you’ve ever wanted to learn the answers to such questions as "How do planes fly?" and "How do pilots control aircraft?" this is the class for you!  You will design and build a glider from balsa wood, and build a rubber-band-powered plane from a kit.  In addition, you will learn how to balance and flight-trim the glider and plane to improve their performance.

Clay Workshop II (rising grades 3-5)

Pottery students will continue to hone their skills and develop craftsmanship in this workshop.  Projects will include a Navajo dish, small critters, silly faces, a pencil cup and much more.  Painting techniques and texture will be emphasized to help embellish clay works.  The primary goal is to expand the experience of the clay artisan.  Participation in Clay Workshop I is not a requirement.  All are welcome to attend our exhibit day on Friday!

Do you get excited when you hear an ambulance go whizzing by with its sirens blaring and lights flashing?  Ever wonder what is going on inside that ambulance?  If you answered “yes,” then this is the course for you!  Explore the world of Emergency Medical Services, learning about daily operations, how EMTs use medical equipment to save lives, basic first aid and CPR skills, and the hands-on experience of practicing these skills in a classroom setting.

Water Adventure Week (rising grades 4-6) OR (rising grades 7-9) 

This course is designed as a great introduction to water-related adventure activities, and is less physically challenging than the “Adventure Sports Sampler Class.”  You will participate in these abbreviated day trips (weather/water levels permitting):

  • 3- to 5-mile raft float trip on one of the area’s mild rivers;

  • Waterfall hike and swim day;

  • River-tubing day of floating in fabric-covered tubes down an area river;

  • Swimming hole day of old-fashioned playing in the water at one or two area swimming holes; and

  • A trip to an area lake to relax, paddle kayaks, play on a giant inner-tube, or have fun participating in water and beach games. 

All necessary equipment and personal flotation devices are provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information will be sent to each student upon registration.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a pot on the potter’s wheel or by hand?  Learn how to throw cups, bowls and other shapes on the potter’s wheel and create hand built pots using coil-building and slab-building techniques.  Decorate your creations with wild textures and colors.  Clay is a fun and challenging medium and the projects are limited only by your imagination.  No prior ceramics experience is necessary.  There is a separate class period scheduled for glazing pieces on Monday, July 13, 1-4 pm.  You can pick up your finished work on Friday, July 17.

You will learn a painterly approach using the medium of acrylic, a water base paint to understand the dynamics of color and the constructs of form.  Studio work will be conducted in the new painting studio located in the Arts/Humanities Building.  Your studies will include a still life painting, a landscape, and a master study of a famous artist to better understand painting techniques.  Sketch books will be used to practice drawing shapes and create forms using the element of value.  All are welcome to attend an art show on Friday.

Why, yes, I did. There is more than one way to make a print. Gelatin makes a great dessert, but it also makes cool abstract monoprints. Silk screen does not have to be made with silk. Screen prints can be reproduced several times. Bring your curiosity and your imagination to an exploration of two printmaking techniques.

Crime Scene Investigation & Forensics (rising grades 7-12) 

Receive practical instruction in Forensics and Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) and cover basic topics of crime scene processing.  The hands-on area covers latent fingerprint processing using black, gray, magnetic and fluorescent powders as well as DNA search & collection, crime scene practical exercise, and much more.  Lab work includes developing/recovering latent prints and tool pry marks from different surfaces.  Learn to search for and properly recover suspected DNA and Trace materials using high-intensity lights. “Real” police cases will be discussed and the week culminates with a mock crime scene investigation in which you work in teams to present your results to the class.  If you are interested in purchasing a Latent Evidence Field Kit, bring $20 to the first class.

Outdoor Adventure Sports Sampler (rising grades 7-9)

This day-long course will offer introductory experiences in four of today’s most popular outdoor adventure sports: top-rope climbing, wild cave exploration, recreational kayaking and river tubing.  You will participate in day trips doing all four of these activities (weather and water levels permitting) in the first four days of the course.  The last day will be a lake trip to relax, paddle kayaks, have fun playing on a giant inner-tube, and participate in different water and beach games.  To keep this course fun for repeat participants, each year we select different caves and climbing areas on a three-year cycle.  All technical and safety equipment is provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

You will redesign the interior of a classroom to create a Funhouse experience!  This workshop will explore the concept of scary art and the thrills and chills of a Funhouse.  The rules of scary art in this workshop include: 1) no blood and guts; 2) no weapons, and 3) no violence.  Weird creatures may lurk around dancing under the black lights, but don’t be afraid – it’s all in good fun!  You will dress in costume and be a tour guide for the funhouse exhibit, which will be open to all on Friday.

Caving Adventure Week (rising grades 7-9)

This day-long course offers introductory experiences in different types of wild caves in the region.  You’ll explore at least four caves based upon the group’s abilities and interests, learning about cave formation, ecology and preservation.  Coveralls and safety equipment are provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and water bottles each day.  Please note that you must have the physical ability to crawl and climb up or down short distances and be comfortable in a cave environment.  Course information will be sent home to each student upon registration.

Outdoor Adventure Sports Sampler (rising grades 7-9) 

This day-long course will offer introductory experiences in four of today’s most popular outdoor adventure sports: top-rope climbing, wild cave exploration, recreational kayaking and river tubing.  You will participate in day trips doing all four of these activities (weather and water levels permitting) in the first four days of the course.  The last day will be a lake trip to relax, paddle kayaks, have fun playing on a giant inner-tube, and participate in different water and beach games.  To keep this course fun for repeat participants, each year we select different caves and climbing areas on a three-year cycle.  All technical and safety equipment is provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information packets will be sent to each student upon registration.

Water Adventure Week (rising grades 4-6)  

This course is designed as a great introduction to water-related adventure activities, and is less physically challenging than the “Adventure Sports Sampler Class.”  You will participate in these abbreviated day trips (weather/water levels permitting):

  • 3- to 5-mile raft float trip on one of the area’s mild rivers;

  • Waterfall hike and swim day;

  • River-tubing day of floating in fabric-covered tubes down an area river;

  • Swimming hole day of old-fashioned playing in the water at one or two area swimming holes; and

  • A trip to an area lake to relax, paddle kayaks, play on a giant inner-tube, or have fun participating in water and beach games. 

All necessary equipment and personal flotation devices are provided.  You must bring a bag lunch and drinks in plastic screw-top bottles each day.  Course information will be sent to each student upon registration.
