MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

Available as credit or non-credit programs:

Manufacturing Management

This course of study will benefit ‘key’ contributors such as lead personnel, supervisors, and managers who have a direct impact on the bottom line performance of a manufacturing facility.  Learn the role of management in manufacturing, managing change on the factory floor, and team building.  A team ‘Capstone’ project is required.

Industrial Management

This course of study includes planning, organizing, directing, and influencing industrial activities.  May include research, product design, methods and time management, quality assurance and current manufacturing methodologies.

Principles of Industrial Technology I

Learn how to relate to the fast changing world of technology and its application in the manufacturing environment.  Emphasis is on how the use of technology interrelates to the business goals and objectives of the manufacturing facility. Heavy team activity and the requirement of a ‘Capstone’ project reinforces the learning experience.  A calculator is required.

HIGH PERFORMANCE MANUFACTURING

Industries located within the Central Shenandoah Valley region and elsewhere in Virginia need highly skilled workers who can use integrated computer manufacturing systems to design, produce, and evaluate processes.  As the use of technology steadily increases in production of equipment and other advanced manufacturing processes, training is urgently needed to meet employer demand for skilled workers.  To meet this demand, BRCC is providing training for employees to become Certified Shenandoah Valley Manufacturing/Engineering Technologists or Specialists.  The curriculum for the Shenandoah Valley High Performance Manufacturing/Engineering Certifications has been developed by representatives from local industries.

Students may complete one of the two certificate programs by taking one, two, or all three of the following courses.

Manufacturing Human Resource Utilization

Manufacturing Technology & Asset Utilization

Manufacturing Financial & Capital Utilization

Certified Manufacturing Technologist

This three-course program has been designed to enable individuals from the manufacturing sector to obtain local certification that may help them prepare for the National Society of Engineers Manufacturing Technologist Certification.  It may also lead to an Associate Degree in Technical Studies with a Concentration in High Performance Manufacturing/Engineering Technology.  Individuals completing the three 12-week courses listed above will receive a joint BRCC-Industry Certification of “Certified Manufacturing Technologist.”

Certified Manufacturing Specialist

Individuals wanting to gain skills in a specific area will be required to complete one of the Applied Technology and Manufacturing courses from the above list.  Students completing that one course will receive a joint BRCC-Industry Certification of “Certified Manufacturing Specialist.”

Manufacturing Human Resource Utilization

The utilization of Human Resources in 21st century manufacturing is dependent on two factors for optimizing labor performance:  1) The skills a labor force must possess to process materials into products and 2) The business unit’s policies that support the organization and motivate the workforce in accomplishing set business goals an efficient manner.  Technical skills are built on the principles of math and the sciences.  The efficient use of these skills yields planned and consistent outcomes.  The workplace must also be trained in problem and decision analysis skills to minimize the time required between observing a problem and reacting to it in order to obtain the most desirable outcome at the lowest possible level of decision making.  HR skills involve an understanding of how to best structure the labor effort of the business unit goals and objectives.  These skills often require the manager to be aware of the drives and emotional needs of their labor force.  An effective manager can measure and enhance individual performance by understanding individual personalities and satisfying emotional needs.  This module reviews many of the cultural and emotional aspects of personality development that must be understood to accomplish the goals of the modern supervisor.

Manufacturing Financial and Capital Utilization

Economics is the study of how we as a society, a nation, or a global community interact with one another in order to meet the wants and needs of the individual. We need to understand how we manage our assets and capital in terms of the value produced and how that capital is spent.  Economics makes no judgments on how we use individual or collective capital, but evaluates the results of our choices as consumers.  Studying economics can result in a higher benefit or yield on our limited resources due to the broader understanding of value and how it can be enhanced to better meet our needs.  Students in this course will be required to complete a Capstone Project that identifies an issue or concern related to this topic that could exist in the modern manufacturing environment and should offer potential for improvement to an organization’s bottom line, if the conclusions of the project were implemented.  A presentation to class peers on the result of the study will also provide a valuable experience.
