CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS

A+ Certification Exam Preparation

This class is taught by an experienced CompTIA A+ Certified and Dell Certified BRCC Adjunct College Instructor.  The CompTIA A+ certification is a validation tool to provide employers with technicians who have the latest skills to perform as computer support professionals.  Students will focus on the CompTIA qualifiers and learn in-depth about issues with the Windows operating system(s), configuration, methodical troubleshooting, diagnosing, preventive maintenance, basic networking and hardware components.  Each class will be comprised of lecture, interactive discussion, real-life troubleshooting examples and actual CompTIA A+ exam questions.  Required book is CompTia A+ Essentials Exam 220-601 by Mike Meyers, McGraw/Hill/Osborne Publishers.  (Chapters 2 thru 4 to be read before first class).

Advanced Site Design Using CSS

This course will focus on web design that conforms to W3C recommendations for XHTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).  You will also learn the concepts of semantic CSS and table-less design.  Prerequisite: Internet Programming Using XHTML course or experience and permission of the instructor; JavaScript recommended.

After this course, students who have completed all three courses (Internet Programming, JavaScript, and Advanced Site Design), will have the opportunity to sit for the W3Schools HTML Developer exam if they desire; instructor will have more information.

Cisco Networking

This course covers material that is part of Cisco’s Networking Academy program and of BRCC’s credit class but offered in the non-credit environment, in response to local business requests. Course material will concentrate on covering the objectives on the CCNA exam. Upon completion, students will have the needed material to sit for the certification exam, if they so choose.

Self-directed version: Become comfortable using the CISCO material and the Cisco Internetworking  Operating System (IOS).  You will cover text material on your own and come together to participate in hands-on lab procedures covering the material.  You will be able to measure your understanding of the material with study questions available on Blackboard and available up to two months after the end of class.  Routers are available for use between class meetings.  Required text: Cisco® Certified Network Associate Study Guide By Todd Lammle, 6th Edition, Sybix, 2007. ISBN 978-0-470-11008-9; available at the bookstore.

Practical Information Systems Security

Effective information systems security for enterprises requires far more than installing a firewall.  This course will help IT Managers and staff review, plan and implement a practical security plan to protect their organization's assets.  Prepare for information security threats with server, desktop and wireless strategies, policies, documentation, firewalls and Virtual Private Networks plus intrusion detection and monitoring to protect your data, services and employees.

Practical Network Security

Data network technology is changing at a rapid pace to keep up with new demands for not only bandwidth but also to accommodate new services such as voice communications.  Along with these new demands for service are new organizational-level security threats and concerns.  This course provides IT managers and staff a “whole body” review of their network security including  firewalls, routers, switches, topology planning, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and wireless, emphasizing prevention through planning, documentation, policies and monitoring and more hardware configuration than Practical Information Systems Security.  While not a prerequisite, this course naturally follows and drills deeper into network layer security than Practical Information Systems Security.

Practical JavaScript

JavaScript is a key element in modern web design. It is a powerful language that can make web pages more dynamic and interactive. In this class, you will learn various dynamic and interactive applications of JavaScript that can be generalized for customized use on web pages. (Prerequisite: Internet Programming or permission of the instructor).
