Brian Borntrager
After
graduating from Calvary Christian Academy with an advanced high school
diploma, Brian Borntrager decided to begin his college education at BRCC.
“The main reason was that it would save me money,” he explained. He added,
“Also a community college tends to be more flexible in getting classes at
times that fit around your work schedule.”
Currently the 20-year-old is enrolled in the transfer program, and plans to major in nursing, specifically in the trauma field. “After I get my BSN, I am going to work for a while until I have enough experience in the nursing field to enter into medical missions. I plan to go overseas into countries that don't have medical resources or access to healthcare and provide care for those people.”
Brian is an EMT with the Singers Glen Volunteer Rescue and Broadway Rescue Squads and has a part-time job at as a clinical nursing assistant in the emergency room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He says this job gives him insight as to the skills and duties required of nurses, and a sneak peak at what his future career might be like.
At BRCC, Brian is involved in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) as the Vice President of Service. “I am in charge of organizing activities, such as community service projects,” he explained. PTK advisor Ann Smith noted, “Brian did an outstanding job planning and coordinating efforts for the College’s ‘Dump the Pump’ campaign which raised awareness about the free shuttle service for BRCC students and significantly increased ridership.” Smith also noted that Brian is responsible for coordinating the toner cartridge and plastic bottle recycling projects on campus.
Through his PTK involvement, Brian volunteers with New Bridges (an ESL class in Harrisonburg) by helping with the childcare during the class for the parents on Monday evenings.
He is also active in his church as a worship leader and Sunday school teacher.
