Placement Tests

Placement testing is required of all students enrolling in a program or taking English and math classes unless you meet exemption criteria established by the admissions office.  If you are not sure which test(s) you need to take, check with the admissions office or an academic advisor.

Placement Tests Administered

Placement Testing Preparation

  • All placement tests are adaptive, computerized, untimed tests.
  • Allow at least 2 - 2 ½ hours to complete each test.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to take each of the placement tests during separate testing sessions to prevent “test fatigue”.
  • You will get a print-out of your scores upon completion of the test.
  • Test scores are valid for five years (effective Summer 2017).

Taking a Placement Test

Tests are given in the Testing Center on a walk-in basis to admitted students.  No appointment is necessary.

What to Bring

  • Photo I.D.
  • BRCC student ID number (EMPLID)
  • MYBRCC username

Students 16 and younger may bring a photo ID from the DMV.

Calculators and other aides are provided. Personal calculators are not permitted.

Retest Policy

One retest is allowed within 12 months of the initial attempt for each placement test, if taken before you enroll in a developmental course. Approval for additional retests is rarely granted, but is considered on a case-by-case basis by the Dean of Student Services.
