SPECTRUM Multicultural Club
"A BRCC Student Of
Diversity Organization"
SPECTRUM International was
founded in February of 1998 after several Blue Ridge Community College
minority students, who were members of the Project Attain program,
attended the Carroll F.S. Hardy National Black Student Leadership
conference in Richmond, Virginia in January of 1998.
The members are more diverse in ethnic
backgrounds and nationalities.
Mission Statement
To unite the multicultural students; to provide a support system among the students to promote high
self-esteem and self-confidence; to expose students to the various ethnic
backgrounds and diverse cultures that are represented on BRCC's campus;
and in essence help the students develop and be proud of their identities,
promote leadership skills through networking and teamwork; and achieve
academic excellence.
Activities
SPECTRUM members sponsor
and organize various campus activities and events that include fundraisers
for community organizations.
- Sponsor the International Students Reception
- Car wash/bake sale fundraisers for non-profit
community organizations
- Sponsor guest speakers from diverse cultures
- Co-Sponsor and help organize Black History Month
Events in February and International Month Events in April
- Attend various banquets and conferences;
ie; Multi-Ethnic Perspective Conference and National Black
Student Leadership Conference annually
- Co-Sponsor the BRCC Talent Showcase
- Co-Sponsor monthly workshops on campus for student self and
academic improvement and strategies for academic success
as part of the
Project ATTAIN Retention Program. Such workshops include "Time
Management", "Managing Stress", "How To Develop a Budget" and,
"How To Write A Resume". Workshops are open to all
students at no cost and a free lunch is provided to participants.

Meetings
SPECTRUM'S regular meetings are on the 2nd and 4th
Fridays during the college's activity period, 12:30 - 1:30.
They are announced in the college's newsletter, The BRCC Weekly.
