James Madison University Advising Guide

BRCC College/University Transfer Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree
Advising Notes for Students Seeking Admission into the Department of Kinesiology

Upon admission into the Department of Kinesiology, a student must choose one of the following areas of concentration:

  • Exercise Science and Leadership (there are two tracks within the concentration: Exercise Leadership, which will be discontinued in 2007-2008, and Exercise Science);
  • Physical and Health Education Teacher Education, a five year program leading to the Master of Arts in Teaching;
  • Sports Management (students choosing this concentration must declare a General Business minor through the College of Business).

Students are encouraged to use the following advising guidelines to select BRCC courses within the College Transfer program that are needed for a particular Kinesiology concentration.

For Exercise Science and Leadership, Exercise Leadership track, take:

  • MTH 157 (will substitute for JMU’s MATH 220)
  • CHM 111 (will substitute for JMU’s CHEM 120)
  • BIO 141-142 (will substitute for JMU’s BIO 270 and BIO 290). Both courses must be taken in order to meet JMU’s anatomy and physiology requirement.

For Exercise Science, Exercise Science track, take:

  • MTH 157 (will substitute for MATH 220)
  • MTH 270 (will substitute for MATH 205). Please note that MTH 163 is a prerequisite to MTH 270.
  • CHM 111-112 (will substitute for CHEM 131/131L and CHEM 132/132L)
  • PHY 201 (will substitute for PHYS 140/140L)

For Physical Education and Health Education Teacher Education, take:

  • PSY 230 or PSY 231-232 (will substitute for GPSCY 160)
  • HLT 100 if student wishes to fulfill the program’s graduation requirement for CPR/First Aid certification before the student transfers

Note: This concentration requires one semester of human anatomy. The student may fulfill this requirement by completing both BIO 141-142 or may choose to take JMU’s BIO 290 after transferring.

For Sports Management, take:

  • BUS 241 (will substitute for COB 218)
  • ACC 211 (will substitute for COB 241)
  • ECO 202 (will substitute for ECON 201)
