Advising Guide for Transfer Teacher Education: Pre IDLS Major

(For Student Pursuing Pre-K-3, Pre-K-6, 6-8, and Special Education at James Madison University)  Interested students should contact Mrs. Mayes to discuss program criteria and fill out a letter of intent.

First Semester Introduction to PTEAA
  • Download Intent form from coe.jmu.edu/esc/
  • Meet with BRCC advisor
  • Take courses as outlined in agreement
  • Send copy of qualifying SAT or ACT scores to JMU
  • Review requirements
  • Sign letter of intent and send to JMU
  • Receive intent form
  • Share name with program coordinator
  • Confirm enrollment/start date
Second Semester Review progress
  • Meet with BRCC advisor
  • Update letter of intent if needed
  • Take courses as outlined in agreement
  • Take Praxis I and identify JMU as a recipient of Praxis I scores
Update letter of intent if needed  
Third Semester Audit progress
  • Meet with BRCC advisor
  • Take courses as outlined in agreement
  • Retake Praxis I as needed
  • Determine if student is on track to meet agreement
  • Update letter of intent if needed
If any change in date of enrollment, confirm enrollment/start date
Fourth Semester Apply for admission to JMU (Must be within 5 years of original intent letter)
  • Meet with community college advisor
  • Apply for admission to JMU by March 1 for fall semester, Jan. 15 for summer and Oct. 15 for spring
  • Update letter of intent if needed
  • Provide original to student to send in with JMU application
Coordinate with Admissions Office to review students applying for JMU under PTEAA
Summer or Semester before enrolling in JMU Acceptance to JMU
  • Attend JMU transfer orientation
  • Attend teacher education information session at orientation
  • Plan program of study at JMU with education advisor
  • Apply for admission to teacher education
  • Meet all requirements for acceptance in teacher education
  Process substitution of MATH 220 for 207 if appropriate
First semester at JMU  
  • Continue taking courses required for major
  • Begin taking education courses if appropriate
  Generate report on number of enrolled students under PTEAA
