Transfer PROGRAM
BRCC's College/University
Transfer Program
is a 63 credit hour program that awards an
Associates in Arts
and Sciences (A.A.&S.) degree. It
is
designed for students who plan to pursue a bachelor's
degree at a four year school. The program can be structured to
fulfill the basic requirements of your chosen major.
Virginia
state institutions generally give preference in admission to students
transferring with the A.A.&S. degree over those who want to
transfer courses only.

Curriculum
The complete program description, curriculum, and course
descriptions can be found in the college catalog.
The Counseling Center in
the Houff Student Center will guide you through
the transfer process, and help you with decisions about
colleges, majors, and courses.
Plan ahead
If you choose the transfer program, you should decide
on a major and a college or university as soon as possible.
Each college
has its own transfer policy that will
guide you in selecting BRCC courses. While some classes
are generally thought of as "safe" transfer classes,
each four-year institution decides whether or
not a BRCC course is accepted for transfer credit. It also
makes a difference if you are planning to transfer courses
without receiving your A.A.&S.
If you haven't made the final decision, at least narrow your
choice of college and major or academic area down to several
before you sign up for courses.
Select a college or university
It is important to find a college or university that feels
comfortable to you and offers your major. If you have
already decided on a major, compare the programs offered by
several colleges to help you in your decision. If the location
is the most important factor, visit several colleges to get a
feel for the campus and vicinity.
Your research should include online
Websites and campus visits. Many colleges offer specific
visitation times for transfer students.
Choose a major at a four-year school
If you haven't selected a major, contact the Counseling
Center and Career Services in the Houff Student Center at BRCC
for assistance with career planning.
Try to decide on your major or at least a general academic
area as soon as possible since not every school has every major.
Study the curriculum and requirements for your intended
major
After you have decided on a major, get a copy of the catalog
of your chosen transfer college/university to use as a resource
in course planning. The Counseling Center and Career Services
have copies of catalogs that you may look over. Many
institutions also have copies of the catalog available online.
Most of the VA colleges encourage BRCC students to complete
an AA &S degree before transfer. However, there are some majors
at some colleges that prefer you transfer after only 1 year at
BRCC because of the sequencing of the program's courses (e.g.
Architecture at VA Tech). Check this out for your college/major.
Plan your BRCC coursework carefully
Speak to a BRCC counselor before you register for your 1st
semester classes or as soon as you know you want to transfer.
The counselor can advise you on taking courses that meet
specific degree and elective requirements in the BRCC AA & S
Degree Program.
You should also check to see if your chosen college has a set
of core requirements. These are classes that every student must
take regardless of their major. These degree core requirements
are usually listed in the front section of the college's catalog
or transfer guide. If there is an agreement between BRCC and
your college, the core requirements may be waived if you receive
an A.A.&S. Read the transfer agreement carefully and talk to a
BRCC counselor if you have any questions.
In addition to matching core courses, whenever possible you
should choose courses that fall within your intended major at
your transfer college. You will normally
transfer as a junior,
so you will need to match the required courses in your major as
closely as possible with comparable courses at BRCC. Planning
ahead is strongly encouraged.
For your first semester of courses,
academic advisors in the Counseling Center will assist you in
planning your class schedule. During subsequent semesters,
your assigned faculty advisor will also be available to help you
choose the right courses for your program and major.
Watch for transfer events
BRCC Student Services schedules Transfer Advising Workshops,
the Mini College Fair, and college rep. visits during the Fall
and Spring semesters.
