2003-2004 Institutional Effectiveness Report

Introduction

The Blue Ridge Community College 2003-2004 Institutional Effectiveness Report is a compellation of the 2003-2004 assessment outcome reports from the College’s administrative, service, and academic units. Annually each unit of the College is required to develop and submit, through the appropriate supervisor, an assessment blueprint. The blueprint presents the unit’s objectives for the upcoming year, methods for assessing the unit objective outcomes and the criteria by which the unit will determine the objective to be met. For academic units the focus is student learning outcomes. These initial annual assessment blueprints outline each unit’s assessment plan for the upcoming year and are compiled annually in the Blue Ridge Community College Institutional Effectiveness Plan.

The annual reporting of unit outcomes corresponds with the end of the academic year. Program heads for the academic programs meet with the appropriate division dean each spring just prior to summer break. At this time the academic program heads and the division deans review the year’s outcomes and the need to adjust existing student learning outcome objectives, methods of assessment and/or criteria for success. Once approved by the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, the annual report of the previous year’s outcomes and the objectives for the upcoming year are then forwarded to the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness for inclusion in the Institutional Effectiveness Report and Institutional Effectiveness Plan respectively. Administrative and service units follow the same process with the appropriate supervisor each June.

In 2002 the Virginia Community College System released the individual College’s from having to produce and submit the annual Assessment Report. The elimination of this mandate freed BRCC to restructure its annual reporting process. The IE Report is the result of a multi-year process to move from the previously prescribed Assessment Report format to the locally developed IE Plan and IE Report.
