Beekeeping
The honeybee population nationwide has been devastated by infestations of “mites” and diseases; however, with proper care, honeybees can be successfully maintained. Join instructor Fred Hollen and learn about honeybee colony characteristics, required equipment, management techniques and practices, and honeybee disease and parasitic mites. Time will be provided for bee yard hands-on experiences in addition to scheduled classes.

Mushroom Identification
Learn how to identify those colorful mushrooms that come up after a rain. With the guidance of instructor Diane Holsinger, you will learn how to make spore prints and identify mushrooms in the field. Some spring mushrooms will be out and we may find some morels. All classes, except the first one, will be hands-on field classes. Recommended field guide for the course is “Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians”, by William C. Roody.

Wildflowers of the Shenandoah Valley
Identify the first wildflowers of spring. With Diane Holsinger’s guidance, you will learn many interesting facts such as why Skunk Cabbage melts snow and what wildflower the Indians used as a salt substitute. From hepatica to violets, learn about the spring beauty all around us on the beautiful rocky slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. All classes, except the first one, will be hands-on in the field.
