Ceramic Creations

Jump into the exciting world of ceramics, led by Phill Ungar, a Shenandoah Valley ceramicist with more than 30 years of experience. Hands-on instruction covers trimming, surface decoration, glazing, and kiln firing; course fee includes studio time/ tools/supplies.  Whether you're a beginner or a more advanced student, you will receive one-on-one instruction. Ceramics:  Formulating Glazes & Kiln Loading*   NEW

Now that you’ve had several advanced courses, join this class to unravel the mysteries of formulating glazes and loading the kiln.  Phill Ungar will review gram scale measurements, hold demonstrations on accurate kiln loading, and share techniques that will save time and enhance your focus. Bring your own paper mask to class each week.

Hand-Building Ceramics   NEW

Why not try your "hand" at a ceramics technique that is uniquely your own?  If you've mastered wheel-throwing classes with Phill Ungar, or if you've wanted to try ceramics but haven't felt comfortable working on a wheel - this is the course for you!  Learn an entirely different set of skills by first creating images or thought patterns - then bring those ideas to fruition with finished projects you'll be proud to call your own!  Class will cover modeling, glazing and slab processes.

Hand-Built, Non-Functional Ceramics NEW

Your opportunity to make sculptural forms offers a new beginning in ceramics. Local artist Janly Jaggard (www.janlyjaggard.com) focuses on visual problem-solving within the design process, then follows with ways to implement your ideas into reality. Pinch, slab and coil-building and modeling will be covered; final surface treatments, such as use of slips, engobes, glazes and alternative materials will be woven into the program.

Lids: Make ‘Em Right, Make “Em Tight! NEW

This small group class, led by Phill Ungar, will equip you with the skills you need to create perfect lids for your next pot, bowl, pitcher, or teapot.

Creative Sight:  See Your World in a Different Light   NEW

Let Deb Booth help you unleash your inner creative genius in this two-part class as she incorporates discussion, laughter and sharing of ideas. Hands-on experiential creation helps expand your ways of “seeing past the ordinary.”  Bring $5 for minimal supplies.

Drawing Basics

Designed for beginners and intermediate artists, you will use simple materials provided the by instructor, Brandon Wallace, to learn shading, composition, and the fundamentals of drawing. Get started on your path to creating, by accomplishing your drawing skills early!

Floral Watercolor Paintings

Discover the joy of creating floral watercolor paintings, as you learn basics of color mixing, brush work, composition, and how to prepare for a painting.  Instructor Janet Cardwell demonstrates washes, values, compliments, and texture techniques, with projects geared toward individual experience levels. Linocuts:  Beyond stamping, relief printmaking as art  NEW

Relief printmaking is an old art, yet very contemporary.  Barbara Gautcher, a local artist and teacher for 30 years, is an award winner in printmaking media: www.oasisartgallery.org/gautcher.htm. Explore traditional methods of printing, using inks, under paintings, and collage.  Some drawing skills helpful, but not required. Bring $40; instructor provides supplies. Great fun!

Mixed Media:  Acrylic Collage with Found Objects   NEW

Do you have a desire to explore the rich world of textures?  Do you have a plethora of pictures, memorabilia and objects?  Using line, shape, space, and especially texture and color, Barbara Gautcher will help you explore the possibilities these objects will have in your abstract compositions. Barbara is a mixed media artist, having taught painting, collage, printmaking, pottery and stained glass, and exhibits in local community art galleries. Watercolors: Simple, Easy, and Fun! NEW

See how simple watercolors can be! Learn basic techniques and explore the potential of this forgiving paint medium. Instructor John Hancock is the current Shenandoah Valley Art Center president and longtime watercolor and water-media painter.
