Tips for Article Searching                                                                                                 Top of Page

  1. Use the Find tool (the magnifying glass in the top upper right corner of your browser) and type in your search term.  This will search the entire article for your topic.  You can quickly see if the article talks about your topic.
  2. Once you find one good article, search all appropriate databases using the author or authors of that good article.  Authors often write more articles on their field, so this is a quick way to find more articles on your topic.
  3. Also do an author search on the Internet.  This could bring up the author's web page or institution where he works/teaches/researches.  E-mail the author and ask if his/her article is available anywhere online.  Often times they will send you the article even if it is not available online, especially if they know you are a high school student.
  4. If any of the articles you have found list the subject headings for that article, use these as search terms to find more articles on your topic.
  5. If any good articles you have found on your topic have a list of references/works cited/related sources/bibliography at the end of the article, these articles and/or books may be good sources for your paper.
  6. Use all the synonyms for your main topic that you can think of.  There's a thesaurus listed above in Online Reference Sources - Dictionaries.  Or you could use WORD's thesaurus which is under the Tools menu.
  7. Type in your search terms using the plural AND singular tense.  Sometimes this will bring up different results.
  8. Once you find one good article, do a journal search in the appropriate databases using the name of that journal.  Chances are this journal has carried other articles on your topic.
  9. Use Boolean searching.  Click here for a cheat sheet on how to do this.
  10. Click the Peer-Reviewed or Refereed boxes under any search boxes.  This will limit your results to only articles that have been reviewed and approved by other experts in the field.

What To Do If the Article You Want isn't Full-Text                                                      Top of Page

What to do if the article you want isn't full-text in the database where you found it:
1.  Look in the Houff Library Periodical Holdings listing. Maybe you can check out the magazine or journal that has your article in it.
2.  Not there?  Then copy and paste the JOURNAL name in the following links This will tell you if it's full-text in one of our 200+ databases:
VIVA Online Journal Locator

VCCS Online Journal Search
3.  Try Metalib.  Fill in as many boxes as possible with information from your citation.  If one of our databases has your article full-text, it will give you a link to it.
4.  Try these sources: JSTOR, Wiley InterScience, Oxford University Press, American Chemical Society and ProQuest Historical New York Times Newspaper.
5.  Try DOAJ:  Directory of Open Access Journals at http://www.doaj.org/.  This has full-text to nearly 91,000 articles.
6.  If your journal still isn't full-text in either of these two links, then copy the ARTICLE title and and paste it into a Google search to see if it's on the author's home page or in an online journal.
7.  Type the JOURNAL title into Google and see if the journal is free online.
8.  If that fails, then use the BRCC Library's free Interlibrary Loan service.  Print the article information and bring that into the library or copy and paste the article information into the E-Mail a Librarian link and we will call you when the article arrives.
