Building a Computer (rising grades 7-12)

Learn the ins and outs of how a computer works as you build one from the ground up. You’ll pick up practical tips such as how to protect your computer from the unknowns of the Internet: spyware, adware and viruses; how to make your system faster with memory management and start-up reduction; and how to connect your computer to the Internet with a cable or with a WIFI connection!

Computer Gaming (rising grades 6-9)

If you enjoy playing computer games, then you will really love this course – computer programming at its most fun! Create your own games and play them on the computer. Learn how to create maps, images, characters and tools in this hands-on, fun-filled gaming course.

Crime Scene Investigation & Forensics (rising grades 7-12)

This practical all-day course covers basic topics in crime scene processing. The hands-on area covers latent fingerprint processing using black, gray, magnetic and fluorescent powders as well as DNA search & collection, crime scene practical exercise, and much more. Lab work includes developing and recovering latent prints and tool pry marks from a multitude of surfaces. You will also have the opportunity to search for and properly recover suspected DNA and Trace materials using high-intensity lights. Several “real” police cases will be discussed and the week will culminate with a mock crime scene investigation in which you will work together in teams and present your results to the class. To purchase an optional Latent Evidence Field Kit, bring $20 to the first class.

Internal Combustion Engine – How it Works (rising grades 7-12) NEW

Disassemble and reassemble a real 4-cylinder engine as you learn firsthand how an internal combustion engine works! You’ll get a detailed overview of the principles of internal combustion engines (fuel octane, flow dynamics of fuel and air, combustion properties, and oil viscosity types), and participate in discussions about each part of the gasoline internal combustion engine, its purpose, and the material it’s made from…plus, see a comprehensive presentation of how everything operates together.

Let’s Animate with Flash! (rising grades 7-12) NEW

Discover the art of animation! In this fascinating class, learn how to make objects move across the screen. Even without drawing skills, you can begin to make shapes and simple stick figures move. The key is to let the computer do most of the work. You will learn a bit of computer programing using ActionScript, so the User will be able to interact with your animation. Have the User guess numbers or names; make choices on what to do next; or just surprise the User with the next event! It will be up to you - the creator of the action!

Nursing: Caring for the Sim Family (rising grades 7-12) NEW

Welcome to Nursing! Do you have compassion and drive? Do you have a desire to help others? If so, this is the workshop for you! This 15-hour course covers life stages from pediatrics to the elderly. Using the college’s recently updated simulation lab, learn how to obtain vital signs, learn basic first aid, interpret basic heart rhythms, listen to heart and lung sounds, and learn to identify normal and abnormal health findings. With the help of Geri, our older adult mannequin, discover common findings of the elderly client. Look at yourself to discover your inner nurse.

Pre-Veterinary Technology (rising grades 9-12)

Interested in veterinary medicine? Explore the veterinary world and learn the roles of the veterinarian, veterinary technician and veterinary assistant. Learn the basics of animal handling, operation of a veterinary hospital, and common medical problems of animals. Meet farm animals, companion animals, and exotic animals in a veterinary clinic setting under the guidance of an experienced veterinarian and veterinary technician.
