Learning Can Be Fun

Art, Music, Dance, Theatre

Acting (rising grades 4-6)

Whether you already love to act, or just want to give it a try, you’ll want to take this fun class! Pick up basic terminology of drama, as well as directions on the stage (where is “stage right”? “upstage left”? etc.). Have fun with exercises and discussions about how the five senses (sight, smell, taste, feel, and sound) are so important in character development. You’ll also have lots of opportunities to play improvisational games. And, best of all, we’ll rehearse a short play to perform for family and friends on Friday!

Acting: Character Work (rising grades 6-9)

If you love acting and being on stage, this all-day class is for you! Explore team building, problem solving, trust building, and creativity (thinking fast on your feet!) through a variety of fun games and exercises. You’ll have lots of opportunities to experiment with characterization and emotion through small scene work. We’ll also rehearse skits written especially for you, as we prepare a performance for parents, family, and friends on Friday!

Creating a Musical (rising grades 1-3)

Join us as we create a musical, using stories, music, costumes, and art made completely by you! We’ll let music inspire us to read, write, move, talk, laugh, sing, play, pretend, dance, design...the list goes on! The week ends in a one-time performance of our original musical masterpiece for your friends and parents!

Elements of Songwriting (rising grades 7-12)

Have you ever written a poem that sounded like it could use some music? Or maybe you’ve played the most amazing original musical idea, but have no words to put with it. Even if you’ve written songs from start to finish, this class will offer something for you. Introducing elements of songwriting (form, style, and working with musical and poetic aspects of a song), this course encourages you to stretch your creative side! You only need an open mind and a creative spirit, but experience playing guitar or piano is a plus.

Folk Art for Kids (rising grades 4-6) NEW

Folk Art is all about taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary...about making something from nothing. Use your imagination to create your own treasures as you paint and draw, hammer and carve, sew and stitch, cut and glue.

Fun & Functional Pottery (rising grades 4-6)

Let’s all get together and “throw” some clay! No, this isn’t about throwing clay around the room; it’s about throwing it on a wheel! Sound like fun? It is! You’ll practice basic steps of throwing on the wheel: centering, making the shape, trimming, and making handles. Then, learn about textures, markings, and glazing. You will put all this together to make a couple of bowls, mugs or cups to take home! Additional class for glazing meets Monday, Aug. 6, 9 am - Noon. Pick up your finished work Friday, Aug. 10.

Glee Club Workshop (rising grades 7-12)

Do you love to sing and dance? Would you enjoy spending a week with like-minded individuals learning several full-blown musical numbers, all taken from the contemporary music scene? Multi-talented Choreographer Lindsey Walters and Music Director Jeff Ryman will guide you through your paces as you prepare these numbers for a grand finale performance for family and friends on Friday! Come join this all-day class for an experience in musical expression you won’t soon forget!

Gotta Dance! (rising grades 5-8)

Sometimes you’ve just gotta dance! After a brief introduction to dance, we’ll cover simple ballet and jazz, and probably even be able to mix in some hip hop at the end for even more fun! No dance experience required. Sign up and learn a whole new way to express yourself!

Guitar (rising grades 7-12)

Bring your guitar and experience the world through six strings! Whether you’re new to the guitar or have been playing for a while, you will learn techniques of playing and practicing in a variety of styles, as well as learning more about the history of the instrument, the many types of music played with it, and a lot of musical interaction! Join us for the fun and thrills of playing the guitar!

Improv Comedy Workshop (rising grades 6-9)

Do you like to laugh or make others laugh? This comedy workshop is an educational experience designed to introduce you to the world of improvisational comedy. Loads of laughs and tons of fun are in store while you learn to think on your feet and explore the dramatic aspects of improv. Register early for this popular class!

Instruments + Music = Art! (rising grades 1-3)

What is a musical instrument? What do you really need to make music? A piano? Spoons? Cups? Beads? Garbage cans? Maybe all it takes is a little imagination! We’ll explore music through our voices, natural rhythms, body percussion; plus, invent and play non-traditional musical instruments using every-day objects. Everyday objects will inspire us to make music; music will also inspire us to make beautiful "fine art" using paint, drawing, movement, dance, or theatre! On Friday, friends and parents are invited to view an art gallery full of our creations, then witness a one-of-a-kind performance we will certainly all remember!

Play With Your Food! (rising grades 1-3) NEW

You always hear that you aren’t supposed to play with your food. Well, in this fun class that is exactly what we will be doing! We’ll make real, no-bake food we can enjoy eating, and we’ll also make play food, still-life paintings and much, much more!

Pottery (rising grades 7-9)

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a pot on the potter’s wheel or by hand? Learn how to throw cups, bowls and other shapes on the wheel and create hand-built pots using coil-building and slab-building techniques. Decorate your creations with wild textures and colors. Clay is a fun and challenging medium and the projects are limited only by your imagination. No prior ceramics experience is necessary. Additional class for glazing meets Monday, July 23, 9 am - Noon. Pick up your finished work on Friday, July 27.

Stage Makeup and Character Design (rising grades 5-8)

How do you make someone who is young look old, or turn a person into an animal? How do you make someone look as though they’ve been beaten up (without harming them, of course)? The magic of theater uses stage makeup, costumes, and an actor’s skill with body language and speech patterns to bring characters to life. Learn how to apply makeup, choose and use costumes, and act through some basic improv techniques, all with the goal of creating a “character”. On Friday, show family and friends what you’ve learned by presenting your characters in a short performance!
