Tommy Morris

Like many little boys Tommy Morris loved airplanes. Now, to the envy of many adults, he gets to work with them daily!

Tommy began taking classes at BRCC the fall after he graduated from Turner Ashby High School. Following one year of studying and working he left for a two-year mission trip in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to aid the Haitian Creole-speaking population there. When the mission ended he returned to Blue Ridge and became involved in SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) and PTK (Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society) – two popular student organizations at BRCC. Deciding to pursue a career in aviation, he also enrolled in BRCC's Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program.

"I enrolled in BRCC's AMT program to greater understand the ins and outs of aviation and to learn more about what it takes to keep aircraft in the air - maintenance wise.  It also seemed like a program that whether I pursued a career in or not, I would enjoy and use throughout my life," explained Tommy.

He's now an airframe and powerplant mechanic for Atlantic Southeast Airlines (a Delta Connection airline) based in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. "My job mostly entails inspecting the different systems and parts of the airplanes to verify everything is in check and clear for safe flight," Tommy said. He added, "We also trouble shoot problems that the pilots may have encountered and determine how to resolve the issue."

Tommy felt Blue Ridge was a smart choice. "The BRCC AMT program is the reason I have the job I have today.  It prepared me with the knowledge and skills needed to obtain my FAA A&P license and much of the skills I need in order to complete my job I learned through the AMT program.  The amount of money many of my co-workers spent in order to go to school and get their license is enormous!  In the end it got us all to the same exact place.  BRCC is a wonderful way to go about learning and preparing for a job in Aircraft Maintenance!"
