Bernard Kocis with BRCC truck

Bernard Kocis

As a mechanic for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, Bernard Kocis likes fast things. So when he needed to get his CDL B license training to be able to drive the team’s new 28-foot straight truck, he turned to Blue Ridge Community College for coursework that would fit into his demanding schedule.

“BRCC was the only place in Virginia that offered a custom course for a Class B CDL,” said Bernard. “This is very important given my travel schedule and the demands placed on me professionally.”

For the past nine years, the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team has been highly successful on the domestic professional racing circuit. Moving up to the “Pro Continental level” required purchasing a new truck that was equipped to function during a one-day competition or a three-week international tour. To be road ready, Lynchburg resident Bernard needed the additional training in a flexible, yet timely manner. BRCC was there with a course he could accomplish inexpensively, in just four days.

Bernard said, “I enjoyed my experience at BRCC and the training has prepared me for the road ahead (pun intended)!”

BRCC’s CDL training can be customized to meet the needs and schedules of students. Beginning drivers or those who need to refresh skills can benefit from course offerings. Training is offered on standard road tractors pulling 48- and 53-foot van trailers, flat-bed trailers, straight trucks and even a bus driver endorsement in a five-day program.
