Calendar of Events

Weeklong activities (M-F):

  • Food drive (M-F); Blue Ridge Area Food Bank barrels will be located across campus; envelopes available for monetary contributions.
  • Hunger website featuring tour of Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, FAQs, etc.
  • Collection of new/gently used Crock Pots • Exhibits (D-E hallway, near Coffee Corner) by BRCC student groups and outside organizations working to combat hunger.
  • Help the hungry; drive a clean car. Blue Ridge Auto Spa (601 Richmond Road, Staunton) is offering a $2 car wash discount Oct. 20-23 for anyone who donates a can of food.

Tuesday, Oct. 21

Video: Morgan Spurlock’s 30 Days: Minimum Wage, followed by discussion facilitated by Ruth Jones, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Contrast: A Series of Skits Dealing with Hunger Issues
(Various locations around campus, BRCC theatre students)

12:30 - 1:45 p.m.

Results presentation on domestic/global hunger (
Plecker Auditorium - P104, sponsored by SPECTRUM) “Blessing Baskets” (quality food items at low cost) available for sale to BRCC students after presentation.

World Food Day Roundtable: Choices for a Warm and Hungry Planet
(A109, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa)

Spend Your Lunch Money - $5
(Cafeteria, sponsored by The Catering Company, Pepsi, and SIFE)
What’s in it for you? Light lunch of soup, roll and can of soda. Then, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank will use your $5 to provide 40 meals for people in need.

5:15-6:15p.m.

Tour of Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (Meet at BRAFB, 96 Laurel Hill Road, Verona) Mark Hackley, Food Procurement Officer, will offer an inside look at the inner workings of the Food Bank .

6:00-8:00 p.m.

Hunger Symposium Concert, featuring Life Song - $5, or bag of nonperishable food

Thursday, Oct. 23

11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Sustainable Agriculture’s Role in Alleviating Hunger
(location TBA, sponsored by Environmental Awareness Club) Presenter Tom Benevento is coordinator of Sustainable Initiatives with the non- profit New Community Project. His work involves developing programs in sustainable agriculture, transportation, and energy conservation to empower and support people who are marginalized. Tom has an MS degree in Sustainable Systems and has worked in Guatemala for 15 years in sustainable agriculture and development with returned refugees and rural farmers.

12:30-1:30 p.m.

From Hunger to Hope: Saving the World’s 400 Million Starving Children (Plecker Auditorium – P104, sponsored by Alpha Beta Gamma) A combination of guests and video segments will explore the severity of childhood starvation and how various international service organizations are fighting courageous battles to save them. Special guest, Dr. Christopher Ashton, a pediatrician who works with children locally and abroad, will present the realities of world hunger and describe some of the strategies being used to save hungry children. Also, the potential of Plumpy-Nut™ will be discussed: a food paste of peanut butter, powdered products, and vitamins distributed by the Doctors Without Borders et others, snatching thousands of starving children from the brink of death.

6:30-8:00 p.m.

Empty Bowl Dinner - $15
(Plecker - P126ABC, sponsored by SIFE, Pepsi, and Wal-Mart) Price includes pottery bowl and meal of soup, roll, and beverage. You may also buy chances (50 cents each) to win a matching soup tureen that will be given away at the end of the event. Also during the evening, BRCC theatre students will present Contrast: A Series of Skits Dealing with Hunger Issues; and nine-year-old Hannah Yoxall will share her story about helping feed the hungry.
