• Matted and framed print of the grounds at University of Virginia by Richard Rummell. At the turn of the century, the artist Richard Rummell (1848-1924) was widely recognized as a premier landscape painter of cities, towns, and universities.  He was well known for his hallmark bird’s-eye perspective and ability to capture the spirit of his subjects.  Rummell painted at an altitude of 300 feet by either literally going up in a hot air balloon or through envisioning the scene in his mind’s eye. The printing house, Littig and Company, recognized Rummell’s considerable talents and commissioned him to paint panoramic bird’s eye watercolors of the nation’s finest universities, colleges, and prep schools.  Rummell traveled to each institution and conferred with the administration to discern the best vantage point from which to capture the spirit of the school.  His precise and detailed panoramic views provide a fascinating snap shot of each institution at a pivotal time in the growth of the American University system.
