EDU 200 Elementary Teacher Education Specialization Advising/Placement Notes

About EDU 200

EDU 200 is required for the College/University Transfer Elementary Teacher Education Specialization program but is open to any interested student. The course is structured with classroom instruction at BRCC and placement in a local school to complete a 40 hour practicum.

Prerequisites

To enroll in EDU 200, you must have completed 24 hours of transfer courses and received a grade of C or higher in ENG 111 and ENG 112 (or equivalents).

Registration Requirements

Complete the following as soon as registration opens to make sure you get a placement.

Registration isn't complete until tuition is paid.  Your place in the class won't be held if there are issues with financial aid or payment.

Placement

  • You will not be placed in a school if:
    • your children currently attend
    • you have attended/graduated within the past five years
  • You will be placed based on your preferred geographic location.

Practicum Hours

  • 40 practicum hours required for all students
  • 60 practicum hours required if you plan to attend Mary Baldwin College
  • If you’re employed by a school system, your work hours cannot overlap with your practicum hours

About Your Placement

After receiving a placement, you are required to contact the host teacher within 48 hours. The dates and times you work in the classroom will be decided by the host teacher.

The primary purpose of the course is observation and reflection; you are encouraged to seek additional opportunities if your host teacher permits:

  • assist with grading
  • visit other classrooms
  • attend after school meetings or functions
  • lead small groups
  • teach short lessons.

You may not get a placement until 3 – 6 weeks into the course. Keep time in your schedule open so you can begin as soon as you are placed.

Evaluation

This is a writing-intensive course. You will be expected to:

  • conduct research and write a short essay each week
  • write brief essays based on your placement experiences
  • keep a binder that contains all of the material gathered throughout the semester, including quizzes, papers, journals, and sign-in sheets or logs.

Your binder will be used as a portfolio to provide evidence of the successful completion of the course to other education programs.

You will also be evaluated by your placement teacher which counts as part of the overall grade you earn for the course.

Any violation of school policies or complaints to the EDU 200 instructor from the administrator or placement teacher can and often will result in an automatic failure for the course.
