Coordinated Internship in Medical Coding

Prerequisites: HLT 143, HLT 144, HIM 253 or HIM 254
Prerequisite or Co-requisite: BIO 142

Supervised on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the College.  Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours.  Variable hours per week.

HIM 253 (4 CR)
Health Records Coding

Co-requisites or Prerequisites: HLT 143, HLT 144 and BIO 141

Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9/10-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered.  Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

HIM 254 (4 CR)
Advanced Coding and Reimbursement

Co-requisite or Prerequisite : BIO 141  and HIM 253

Stresses advanced coding skills through practical exercises using actual medical records. Introduces CPT-4 coding system and guidelines for out-patient/ambulatory surgery coding. Introduces prospective payment system and its integration with ICD-9/10-CM coding.  Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
