Honors Program

The BRCC Honors Program gives successful students enrolled in two-year degree programs the opportunity to seek challenges beyond those found in regular college classes and gives them a competitive advantage in their applications for jobs or admission to four-year institutions. Honors students may participate in the honors seminar, develop “honors contracts” in their regular college classes, and/or enroll in honors courses.

To participate in the honors program, students entering the College from high school must have the recommendations of two teachers and fulfill two of the following requirements: be in the top 10% of their graduating class, have a cumulative grade point average of a least 3.2, or have an SAT score of at least 1100. Students already at the College must have completed at least 12 hours of college-level courses with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and have the recommendations of two instructors familiar with their academic work. Other students may be admitted into the program with special approval from the Honors Coordinator.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society for community colleges. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and to encourage scholarship among associate degree students.

The requirements for membership in Blue Ridge’s Alpha Xi Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa are:

  1. have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above for induction, and must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 thereafter;
  2. be enrolled in a degree program;
  3. have completed at least 12 semester hours in a degree program at BRCC.

Qualified students receive a letter of invitation to join the honor society at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
