Clinical Medical Assistant Training Program

Enter the thriving healthcare field! Clinical Medical Assistants are qualified to work in a physician's office or in clinical settings to assist with routine procedures, care for patients, perform simple laboratory tests, and administer medications. This program is offered in partnership with Boston Reed College. Instruction: 134 hours (including 42 hours online training). Clinical Externship: 160 hours. CPR* American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

Earn a two-year certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers CPR from the American Heart Association. Learn how to recognize cardiac and breathing emergencies and provide appropriate response, including adult, child and infant CPR, 2-rescuer CPR, use of a bag-valve mask, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation using barrier devices, proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and foreign body airway obstruction. Taught by Brad Neher, who has 29 years of emergency response experience, this course meets the regulatory requirements of the Virginia Department of Health, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, OSHA, and Virginia Department of Social Services. Course fee includes full color manual, student CD, and disposable training supplies.  Each class held at the BRCC Plecker Center, 5:30-9:30 pm.

Electrocardiography Technician Training Program NEW

Blue Ridge Community College in partnership with Boston Reed College is pleased to offer the new Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician Training Program. This 70 hour program provides instruction in EKG unit operation and troubleshooting, lead placement utilizing 12 lead EKG, use and understanding of EKG grid paper, recognizing normal and abnormal EKG patterns in all 12 leads and plotting EKG axis. Course fee includes textbooks, program materials and certificate of completion. Kinesio-Massage Therapy Certificate Program* NEW

Kinesio-Massage is much more than another modality or application technique for pain; it is an applied science. Led by Glenn Hakey (The Body Mechanic) this series focuses on understanding pain and its effects on various body types, and using orthopedic massage and various Proprioreceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) techniques as a targeted means of “tailored rehabilitation". The program consists of three modules (see below). Students will receive a BRCC Certificate of Completion; courses count towards National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) certification. Personal Fitness Trainers, Physical Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Athletic Coaches, Medical Massage Specialists, and Certified Massage Therapists can all benefit from this program.

Kinesio-Massage Therapy I

This course consists of four hours of on-line instruction, followed by four hours of hands-on training. You must complete the on-line portion of this class before attending the hands-on training at the BRCC Plecker Center, 8:30 am-12:30 pm. On-line content is available two weeks prior to scheduled class dates.

Nurse Re-Entry Course

Been away from nursing? Prepare to re-enter acute care nursing settings by completing on-line lessons, laboratory simulations, and 80 hours of clinical experience with a preceptor at a local hospital. Personal Training Certification

Become a Certified Personal Trainer – the 4th hottest job in the US, according to ABC NEWS.com, with a national average pay rate of $25 an hour. The five-week course includes 15 hours of “hands on” practical training to prepare you to work with clients one-on-one. Lecture topics include: anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition, and health screening. On the sixth week, you will take the National Exam. Pharmacy Technician Certification Prep Course–Virginia

Phlebotomy

Become a Phlebotomy Technician in a clinical laboratory or public health department setting. Phlebotomy Technicians collect quality samples from patients to produce accurate laboratory results. They must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner. This 148-hour program, offered in partnership with Boston Reed College, is intended for those with no experience. Instruction: 48 hours. Clinical Externship: 100 hours. Online Healthcare Training

Electronic Health Records System Technologist

Blue Ridge Community College, in partnership with Boston Reed College, offers training for a new and exciting career as an Electronic Health Records (EHR) System Specialist. By 2014 electronic health records must be in use by Healthcare Providers. Employment of EHRS professionals by physicians and healthcare provider offices, vendors and government organizations is expected to grow 20 percent by 2018. To meet this demand and fulfill federal requirements, professionals must be trained to assist healthcare providers to choose, implement, and maintain EHR systems. Learn the essential components of the EHR and health information exchange; system selection and implementation, project management; and fundamentals of change. Instruction: 216 hours over 18 weeks. This program is offered entirely online, with weekly assignments and a weekly instructor-led virtual class (8:30 – 9:30 pm EST/EDT). $3600; includes workbooks, online course access and certificate of completion. ICD-10 Medical Coding: Preparation and Instruction for Implementation

Get certified online for the new ICD-10 coding system. The Federal Government has mandated that ICD-10 must be implemented by the healthcare industry in insurance processing, reimbursement, and statistical data gathering by October 1, 2013. This online certificate program compares the old and new systems and trains you in the use of new coding manuals. You'll complete a comprehensive overview of changes for both diagnostic and procedural medical coding, and learn the impact of these changes on coders, healthcare staff, physicians, software systems, documentation, and information technology. Textbooks for this program are included. Register for this certificate program on-line through Ed2Go.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist

Employment for Medical Billing and Coding Specialists in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other healthcare settings is expected to grow 20% by 2018. Learn to accurately record and process patient data, request payments, work with Electronic Health Records (EHR), and submit claims using Medisoft software. Practice using ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to enter patient diagnosis and treatment records, insurance information, and billing and payment records. Students must have English grammar and punctuation skills, an email address, regular access to a PC with printing capability and internet access; and be proficient in keyboarding and use of a word processing program (Microsoft Word recommended). Instruction: 115 hours over 14 weeks. This program, offered in partnership with Boston Reed College, is offered entirely online, with weekly instructor-led virtual classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 8:30–10:00 pm (Eastern Time).
